Roommate is trying to skip out on rent?
My roommate is trying to pull a fast one over on me. The condo is only in my name and he doesnt have a security deposit. I’m moving and he owe’s me rent, utilities and half the steam cleaning almost 00 total. Today he tried to ignore me knocking on his door and then tried the tough guy act when he finally answered it. I stopped that in a hurry but now he’s giving me some lame excuse work took 1 1/2 pay checks from him to replace some handheld scanner they claimed he broke and he wont be able to pay me what he owes till 1-2 weeks (which is when i’ll be gone). I looked at his scanner he said had to be replaced after he left and its still the old one he had before. Its obvious he’s trying to leave without paying so what can i legally do? I’m tempted to swipe some of his stuff to cover the costs. Any Ideas?
Best answer:
What do you know about him that his girlfriend..or boss…doesn’t? Yep. Blackmail.

I love it…go with the Blackmail. And if you don’t have something…make it up! Is Wayne Brady gonna have to smack a bitch????

Legally I don’t know.

Happened to me many times.
I assume he didn’t pay a bond.
It is illegal to hold any of his stuff until he pays for it.
All you can do is take him to court after the event.
Sux, I know.

Don’t take any of his things. Just get up evidence and prepare to sue him if he doesn’t come through in two weeks, otherwise he could sue you for taking his belongings.

You are truly in a bad spot. There is nothing legally that you can do. If you swipe some of his stuff or break his stuff, then “you” have committed an illegal act, and he could report “you”. Good Luck. You could take him to small claims, but getting a judgement is one thing – collecting from a true deadbeat is another.

It sounds like you are a good person and your roomate is a deadbeat.I recommend you make a clean break and move on.You will be blessed for your actions. If you were to swipe some stuff then it would be hang over your head.He could even use it against you legally. If he says he’ll pay you have him put it in writing that way you can use it against him.If not take the lose and you will get it back and them some.I had a roomate that i covered for 3 months. It got old and after i left he got evicted then arrested. After he got out of jail he told me that he had bad karma from me and he paid me back.

Swipe some of his stuff? Is being arrested for theft something you look forward to?
You should have got a security deposit.
What you can legally do is file in small claims court for your money. It sucks when someone is trying to pull a fast one, but small claims is the way to go. You know where he works, so executing on a judgment won’t be hard.
