UPC (bar-code) basics: can someone help me out?

UPC (bar-code) basics: can someone help me out?

Okay… from what I understand so far, getting a UPC is going to cost about 0 for the first year. (750 + 150).

It also appears as though this is for a prefix and then as the manufacturer, our company will add the other remaining number(s) to identify the specific product(s). Am I right so far?

Also…

1. If we have a single product line (say socks) in assorted colors and styles (wool / cotton / decorative / etc.) are we going to have to get a separate upc for each color? for each style? (i.e. are we going to have to shell out 900 bucks per color?)

2. If I’m outsourcing manufacturing of the product:

a) should the overseas maker get the appropriate barcode(s)?

b) or should we get them and send them to the manufacturer?

c) or do we apply the barcode (with the appropriate label) here prior to shipping to retailers?

Thanks…

You are paying for the first 5 numbers which is the code assigned to your company, The last five are your to do with what you want. If you want to have a way of tracking all of your inventory by style and/or color then you need to come up with a plan on how you are going to assign codes to your product. Usually you give your labels to your printer with the barcode on the label. You may be able to have the manufacturer do this if they have the capability. You may need toprovide them the finished labels and a schematic of what labels go with which socks.

    Good luck
