They are codes that when scanned display information about the product that is being bought. Almost everything that can be bought in a store will have a barcode

Bar codes are just another way to store information. Usually the bar codes store pathways to a specific file on a computer or a network, and by scanning the bar code you can call up that file.

A barcode, also bar code, is a machine-readable representation of information, usually dark ink on a light background to create high and low reflectance which is converted to 1s and 0s. Originally, barcodes stored data in the widths and spacings of printed parallel lines, but today they also come in patterns of dots, concentric circles, and text codes hidden within images.

It’s a group of bars encoded with information. This information is used to tracking an item and is stored in some means of a data base. The data base contains the information about the product. This information can be read by many scanners and tracked electronically.
