What are my options to get an instant photo without a portable printer or Polaroid/Polaroid alternatives?
I am hosting a family-friendly event for the community center at which I work. I would like to have a photo opp station and allow families to take their pictures home with them that night. My problem is I do not have access to a portable photo printer and I want the pictures to look better than just a polaroid or one of the fuji alternatives. Any ideas?

The short answer to your question is…. there are no other options
What you could do is talk to the local camera shop and explain your situation. The one I deal with rents photo printers (you have to buy the ink and paper).
The other option, although not “instant”. is to download the photos to a computer and burn them to a CD.

Since you do not intend to start a small business by the side, it does not make sense to invest in a photo printer just for the occasion. I think the best option will be to take the pictures, have a laptop on stanby and have family members come look at them.
Collect their email addresses and shot the photos to them as an email. they can then print the ones they want themselves. or upload it to a photo sharing site accessible to only the people you specify. a good one is kodak gallery
