Inventory management, accounts receivable (maybe even GL), some even have time clock and payroll functions.

Point of sale (POS) or checkout is the location where a transaction occurs. A “checkout” refers to a POS terminal or more generally to the hardware and software used for checkouts, the equivalent of an electronic cash register.

A POS terminal manages the selling process by a salesperson accessible interface. The same system allows the creation and printing of the receipt.

Take a look at MS Dynamics POS 2009 for more info – this solution can manage your inventory, pricing, and bar coding and use reporting tools to build out your numbers.

Point of sale functions may be divided into two categories: front-line and back-office.

Front-Line functions are functions that are used to handle transactions that are directly related to processing sales. For example:

    - Sales
    - Returns
    - Cash Drawer Management
    - Voids
    - Customer Special Orders
    - Layaways

Back-Office functions are those capabilities that one typically performs in a back-office (i.e. not in front of the customer):

    - Item Set-up
    - Inventory Adjustments
    - Transfers
    - Receiving
    - Reporting
    - Tax Config

Not all POS functions clearly fit into one or the other. Some POS systems consider the following front-line while other consider them back-office:

    - Time Clock
    - Cash Drawer Management
