In all seriousness, to answer a question like that requires more information. Disadvantages of a bar code reader as compared to what? For what purpose?

It’s not so much about the problem of the reader itself… more so what the reader will be reading…
if a barcode becomes scratched or crumpled the reader may not be able to read it.

There are none – when used for the intended purpose. Would you rather scan a barcode with 99.9% accuracy or enter the data by hand with about 60% accuracy and 100 times slower?
I’ve even seen some barcode scanners being used to drive nails. Although that’s not the intended purpose it’s been done.
So you have to be a little more clear in what you’re really after.
