What are the limitations to a barcode generator?

Best answer:

The common limitation of a barcode generator is when there is a watermark in the barcode. You can also do rent to this stuff these days.

A bar code is usually just printed on paper or other media. As such, it’s normally permanent or in other words a write once product. It can be read as many times as needed unless physically damaged. A bar code can only store so much information and you have to be able to optically scan the code. You can’t scan bar codes inside a box. The storage limitations of the original or 1-D bar code has led to the development of 2-D, 3-D, and even 4-D bar codes. The link below has more information.

Limitations to a barcode generator? I’m assuming you mean the software tool that actually allows you to input the data and that same tool will create the barcode based on that data.

Hmmm….it all depends on the barcode generator you have. With some barcode generators there is no limitation what-so-ever. You can create linear or 2D barcodes, programming barcodes, serialized barcodes, retail, manufacturing, transportation, healthcare etc.

Some barcode generators only allow you to create linear barcodes and if they aren’t licensed they might change one of the numbers in the barcode before generating it.

If you wanted to know the limitations of a particular barcode generator you could give me the name of the program and I could probably tell you what it can and cannot do.

I’ve worked in the AIDC industry for 18 years and I’ve seen pretty much all of them :-)
