What are the limitations to a barcode reader?
i am doing an assignment for a barcode reader and one of the questions asks what are the limitation to a barcode reader. in other words what cant a barcode reader do- please try to be realistic

Best answer:

Well, the first thing is “it only reads barcodes”. Second, it cannot read tampered or damaged barcodes. And lastly, they cannot read alpahbets.

A barcode reader is only as good as the system in place behind it.

For example, when you get to the till at Walmart and they can’t scan your item… the barcode is ok, but the “system” (Electronic Point of Sale, EPOS) hasn’t been set up properly with that barcode.

Damaged barcodes, or badly printed barcodes can also be an issue depending on how good the barcode reader is.

Barcode readers also have to be programmed for different types of barcodes, and what those barcode’s may mean. For example some barcodes contain use by dates, other’s display until dates, some contain weights, prices etc etc etc, some depends on the database in the system for that information so it all depends on the setup of the system as to the limitations the reader will experience
