What are the specific benefits of having an inventory management system?

I must convince the people in the Demand planning department and Production planning department that inventory management is a beneficial and necessary process for the company. They think when demand and production is planned, inventory is also managed by itself. What can I tell them to convince them it is necessary?

My dad has one for his jewelry business that he runs. It is awsome, it organizes everything. Has prices and pictures. Shows how many pieces are in stock. How many are ordered and need to be shipped. It really speed of the whole entire business no matter what kind of a business it is and it will let the bussiness grow more.

Inventory does not manage itself. It has to be managed closely in order to maintain appropriate levels of product. It also depends on what type of inventory system you’re using. ie. FIFO, LIFO, etc. If you want a good example of inventory management, look up Dell’s just-in-time system. It is considered the most efficient and cost-effective system right now and that’s one of the biggest reasons why they are at the top of their game now.
