A bar-coded product is given a certain unique number that is made up of numerals and alphabets. This number is represented by vertical lines made up in a certain manner. The product description and its cost is stored into the computer along with its bar code number and other required details. When a machine reads the bar code number, the computer to which the machine is linked, can recognize the item description along with its cost, etc. (as may have been recorded by the computer people), and whatever details are required could be printed or made available for further processing.
