What exactly is a UPC Barcode? What is it used for?
Can someone explain it to me? I’m trying to distribute my music online through CD Baby, but I’m not sure if I need a UPC Barcode. I read all of the information on it, but none of it answered my question, do I need a UPC Barcode to sell my music online?

upc barcode is mainly for retail products. this is one way of identifying the company and product. you do not require a upc code to sell music online. it simply helps at point of sale in retail. below is a link to explain it in more detail.

you do not need it –
the “bar code” was developed in the early 70′s and is used to identify a product – the different width lines and spacing can be interperted by a scanner and the information transferred to a computer –
business’ use this in many ways –
1- materials come into the dock and are scanned – the inventory is automatically adjusted based on the information on the bar code
2- when the materials are moved from one location to another within a facility they can be scanned and tracked from location to location -
3- when they are sold – the item is scanned – in the case of retail the value automatically comes up on the register and you are charged for – but, simultaneously – it reduces the inventory
based on the description of what you are doing – there is no reason to start bar coding your product now – if you were to land a big customer who wants to retail your product they may want it done -
there are standard formats that are used & they will tell you exactly which they want – and the information they want the code to contain – to be able to print bar code labels all you have to do is go to a local office supply store and buy a program and printer (about $200-$250) and some labels -
hook up to your computer – and follow the instructions -
