The number of digits is not relevant to the coding used.
There are many differnet standards.

if i remember correctly it doesnt matter how many numbers it has, if your barcode reader cant read it than it doesnt support that format
go here: idautomation.com/java/linearservlet.html
and just print out a barcode with each format and figure out which ones your barcode reader doesnt read or just look up your model barcode reader and see what formats it can read

There are many different kinds of barcode symbologies. Code 3 of 9, Code 128, Interleaved 2 of 5, UPC, EAN and many more. A few of these are fixed length barcodes, but the rest of them can be any length. If you’re scanner isn’t reading a particular barcode, then one of two things is going on.
1. The scanner simply does not support that symbology. This is highly unlikely in today’s scanners.
2. That particular symbology isn’t enabled. If you got a manual with your scanner you should be able to enable different symbologies by scanning the programming barcodes in the book.
If you want to email me a picture of your barcode and tell me what make and model scanner you have I’ll be happy to tell you how to enable the particular barcode you have.
