What is a hardlink?
What is a hardlink?
This is probably a tough question but I’m going to give it a shot non-the less. I am working on an article about how cell phones can read a new generation of barcodes. My question is, when someone says they are hardlinking from a barcode, what does that mean? Is hardlinking the act of taking the picture (scanning) the barcode or is it some type of computer programming language for coding the barcode?
Thanks for any help.

Hard Link is a cromagnum (caveman, aka missing link), that somehow got a hold of a bottle of viagra.

I’ve heard about some kind of technology where a cell phone scans a barcode and then that brings up a website in the cellphones browser. Normally this would be referred to as a “link”. Could this be what they mean?
Hardlinking is not the act of scanning the barcode. I can tell you that for sure. That’s just called scanning or processing or something like that. Link is referring to what the barcode means to the cellphone (what does it do with that information). I’m pretty sure. Hope that helps.

if the term is anything like “hard-coding” in a computer program, it refers to how the information used to process the barcode scan is stored. if this is the case, i would imagine that each valid barcode is stored in the phone with an associated “link” to a predefined action or series of actions. the limitation would be, that if the phone scans a barcode that it does not have a link for, it would do nothing. an alternative to this method would be to dynamically generate the actions based on the barcode itself using some sort of algorithm, or to retrieve the actions from a remote source such as an Internet lookup whereby there is no limit to the number of barcodes the phone can process.

For a minute there, i thought you were talking about file systems. In your case, its a new thing, like you said, you can a barcode or enter a few number/letters on your phone and you get a bunch of info.
Basically, its a hyperlink to the physical world.
Example,
You see a hard drive. You enter the barcode on your phone and then on your phone, you get the specs of the hard drive and any other information the manufacturer wants you to know.
Same example could be used at your local book store. You can the book and just like amazon, it can give you reviews and what other books people have bought along with this book.
