What is some excellent OCR software for scanning text into Word?

What is some excellent OCR software for scanning text into Word?

I would like to scan some of my short stories into Word but my scanner does a lousy job with OCR. It scrambles text and sometimes I can’t even remove the glitches! (Puzzling and frustrating.)

I need to be able to edit the scanned text.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your answers.

I’ve been using Paperport/OmniPage for years and it works fine. I skip most of the yearly upgrades to save money and just upgrade about every 4 or 5 years. The software that came with my Cannon scanner, Abbyy FineReader, works fine too, but I find that OmniPage is a bit more capable.

ABBYY FineReader 9 is the best overall value for business users, while ReadIRIS is the best solution for under $150.

Well, the “gold standard” for OCR is probably OmniPage. However, if you’re shopping for cheaper home-use versions, try Presto Pro (SERIOUSLY accurate and the best value on the market, IMHO) or Abbyy FineReader (good, not great, but the least expensive).

Hope that helps. Bear in mind that OCR is limited, in many ways, by the source material. It needs to be on light or white paper and the characters should be clear (not broken or scribbled). Good luck.

OMNIPAGE IS CONSIDERED THE BEST BUT IT’S EXPENSIVE.
