What is the best point of sale system for independent grocers?
I am looking for an affordable, easy to use, simple, complete point of sale system for a grocery store, with a small food court and coffee bar. Any suggestions?

The main thing you will want to look for is a package that incorporates restaurant functions (such as sending orders to kitchen printers, sides lists, and food recipes to control costs) into a standard retail point of sale system.
I would like to recommend Business Software Solutions Point of Sale System. The Restaurant Point of Sale system allows you to build a touch screen menu of your items on the food court side. Also, included in the Restaurant Point of Sale system is their Retail package for your grocery items.
Information concerning the Restaurant Point of Sale can be found at businessoftware.com/restpro.asp.
Information about the included Retail Point of Sale can be found at businessoftware.com/touchpos.asp.

For me I would say IT Retail has the best point of sales software system for grocery stores hands down. The software takes into account many critical factors that other grocery pos systems do not. Not to mention that the support people at IT Retail are really nice.
