The best Free software for that is FreeOCR. Install it and point to the directory where your scanned images are (must be saved in jpeg). It will load them, and sent them to Microsoft Word automatically.

You can then, re-edit them and ave them as Word doc. Here is the link. Very easy to use and most effective for a Free software. I was amazed at the speed it takes to convert. Less than 10seconds to convert a full page

Forget the expensive OCR stuff and use this and be amazed LOL.

Just download Free OCR software, it is a complete scan and OCR program including the Windows compiled Tesseract free ocr engine also known as a Tesseract GUI. It includes a Windows installer and It is very simple to use and supports multi-page tiff’s, Adobe PDF and fax documents as well as most image types including compressed Tiff’s which the Tesseract engine on its own cannot read. It now has Twain and WIA scanning.
