oo. i heard this story. about the guy who created the bar code. he pattended himself and became supper rich. he is a car fanatic and has a huuuge garage full of exotic cars. its crazy. also an interesting fact about the bar code is that it has the letters 666 somewhere in there ( i think in the end) and this is so it can work or something ( i am not sure.) all i know is that there are some groups that hate this guy because of the “666″ thing. anyway sorry i didnt answer the question, but thats what i know about the guy who created it.

Freight Cars on Trains were the first containers to use the bar code system. Of course they weren’t used to ring up the value but for tracking the freight accross the country. My uncle was an engineer and this was when I was a kid and everything in the stores was still being rung up by hand. I think the first items to utilize bar codes for retail were cigarettes and beer placed there to assist the government in tracking the sales so they could get their hefty cut.

The first product to have a modern-type bar code included was a packet of Wrigley’s Gum. Bar coding was actually invented in the late 1950s but didn’t catch on – they looked like bulls-eyes.

In June of 1974, the first U.P.C. scanner was installed at a Marsh’s supermarket in Troy, Ohio. The first product to have a bar code included was a packet of Wrigley’s Gum.

Here’s the story of the bar code:

I don’t know which was the actual first item to have the code put on, but it’s true that the first item to be scanned was Wrigley’s Gum. The pack of gum is on display at the Smithsonian.

    Crazy, huh?

On June 26, 1974, the first product with a bar code was scanned at a check-out counter. It was a 10-pack of Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit chewing gum. The pack of gum wasn’t specially designated to be the first scanned product. It just happened to be the first item lifted from the cart by a shopper whose name is long since lost to history. Today, the pack of gum is on display at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History.
