Whats the best way to create a basic stock control database?

Whats the best way to create a basic stock control database?

I need to make an inventory control database.
Ideally, I would like to keep track of
Stock quantity
Stock description
Stock location

Say someone wants 4 mice, I would like to go to the database, find out where the mice are, and type in how many have been removed (4), and for the quantity to update.

It would be good to have the stock details stored in MS Excel. Can I put an MS Access database over the top of this?

How easy/difficult can this be, and has anyone done it before?

Any help/tips/sources are appreciated!!
