supermarkets will slowly adopt these for stock control as supermarket barcodes only have a few characters enough to get the ID and price and not the extra infomration that 2D ones can show.

Most common bar codes found on packages are 2-D barcodes. The long vertical barcodes that we see on boxes and cans are 2-D bar codes and contain the number that you see at the bottom. These bar codes are used by scanners to read the product. The product is matched to it’s price in a lookup database, and this price appears on the checkout screen.
There are 3-D bar codes as well. These look like a rectangle of numerous tiny black and white squares. These types of bar codes contain much more information than the 2-D kind (can be several thousand bytes of information) and are harder to read by machines. These codes can be encrypted and can have layers of security. The back of your drivers license is an example of a 3-D bar code.
