When offering graphic design/ multimedia services…?
I once worked for a company that contracted the services of a graphic design firm to design product labels for them. They provided a unique image brand for our company’s product identity. My understanding is that they did indeed pay for the designs in full, but for some reason, the graphic design firm would only allow my company to have the .PDF’s rather than the .AI files which we needed to make crucial changes regarding product safety information.
Why were they withholding the original files? Wasn’t the work now property of the company that purchased the service? Doesn’t payment of these services automatically transfer ownership of the original files? I was under the impression that with the exchange of money comes ownership.

not always, it depends what agreement the two parties had, the original files may be propriety, just like when you purchase microsoft program, the operating system still belongs to them..
