you would need to buy a dna extraction kit, which is a simple series of buffers, a centrifuge or a filter. then buy an electron microscope with some sort of image capture device.

hey presto – you have a picture of your own dna.

i wouldn’t get too excited though, what you would have would be a picture of a protein blob. People imagine that dna sits in cells looking all twisty and pretty like in diagrams.

As there is about three meters of DNA in each cell, DNA is wrapped round histones to save space and then parts un wound when required either for protein transcription or DNA replication.

If you do a google image search, you will find that there are no pictures of DNA, only diagrams.

it is a bit difficult but not impossible if you are willing to pay and people in labs being willing to help:

    1. first go to a molecular biology lab and state your wish. give a drop of blood to extract DNA from.. they ll use a dna extraction kit and give your dna dissolved in buffer.

    2. find a crystallography lab. ask them to crystallize your DNA.

    3. you ll have DNA crystals

    4. find a lab that has X-Ray diffraction facility. they ll get a diffraction image of your DNA crystal

    5. finally using some programs, they can produce 3D structure of your DNA.

    6. you can even get a movie in which your DNA molecule can be rotated.

it all depends on people in lab willing to help you.

Have you tried “DNA double helixes r Us”? Do they have branches in Australia?
