Where do I buy a UPC code for a new product?

Where do I buy a UPC code for a new product?

If I buy it from the UCC it is a minimum of 0 and I have to renew every year for 0. There are websites that claim to buy in bulk and then sell indivdual codes for less than 0. No renewal fee. Does anyone have any experience with this?

The Uniform Code Council, Inc (UCC) will assign a manufacturer, distributor or seller prefix to you and then you supply the remaining digits including check digit. So you need to be part of the UCC to play the game. If you do not have lots of products you can work with an existing distributor who has a UCC prefix to bar code your product for a very reduced fee.

To make a UPC bar code for a new product begin by getting a manufacturer number from the Uniform Code Council: http://www.uc-council.org/ You then assign a product number for each SKU. The manufacturer number and the product number together must be 11 digits long. Remember: each of your products needs a unique UPC bar code.

UPCTools creates UPC, Bookland, ISSN, JAN, and EAN bar codes: http://www.azalea.com/UPC/buyUPC.html
