    The UPC-A code is a 10 digit main number plus 2 digits offset slightly for a total of 12 digits. The leading number of the 12 is usually a zero but not always the last of the 12 numbers is a check digit.

    UPC-E code is a short version of the code used on small packages. It has 6 main digits plus 2 slightly offset for a total of 8 digits.
