which radio scanner is better a handheld or base?
I belive this is a ham radio if not sorry for misinterpretation anyway I want to buy a radio scanner but not sure which is better a handheld or base scanner??
here are the 2 i am thinking about buying:
radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3132685
radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2973252

I would prefer to have a portable scanner but i mostly want to know which one is better. please give some kind of explanation why one is better than the other or why the equal quality. also if you perhaps have a better scanner in mind please post buying link to it thanks alot.

Best answer:

The base scanner has more functionality (scans for local transmissions within 1000 feet, so you may be able to hear private conversations). What the portable scanner lacks in functionality, it makes up for with portability.

I like either, but handhelds are good, because they run on batteries. It’s fun to listen when the power is out. Either one is a good quality. That said, find out if the police in your area operates on digital. That will narrow your search pretty well.

    Enjoy…

    BTW…this is not a ham radio…

If portability is not a real need I would highly recommend a Base Station Scanner. I have several of both portable handhelds and base stations and I prefer the base stations.

I personally like the basestations more because the audio quality is better overall in general and they are easier to use while setting desktop.

If you truely need to be mobile with your scanner than it is also an easy choice and you would need to go with the portable.

Both scanners in the links are nice choices by the way.

These aren’t Ham transceivers but they will receive a few of the Ham bands.

The base or the portable you can hook a base antenna to and get excellent range that way. The hand held is nice to have because where ever you go you can listen to it and it fits in your coat pocket.

I have a hand held unit and it goes everywhere. It has 50 memories so I have half programmed for home and the the other half split up between the two other cities I go to most often.

Another brand to consider is the uniden bearcat but radioshack’s units are fine.
