Which type of retail scan code (UPC or EAN-13) do I need to sell my product to retailers?

Which type of retail scan code (UPC or EAN-13) do I need to sell my product to retailers?

I have no experience in this field, but from what I can tell, I need to register/buy either a UPC or EAN-13 code for each of my products before I even bother to attempt to get my product (which is a software retail box) into retail stores. But, i can’t really tell which I need, or if this is even what I need? If i need a UPC, they look pretty expensive directly from the “main” site, but I see other sites selling “official” UPC codes for about each – is this legit? Any hints? Thanks!
Thanks for the info. That’s the problem though – I’m not exactly sure where the product will be marketed; I don’t have any contracts lined up yet, I wanted to get this part taken care of first.

It seems to be that just about everything would be a UPC, except for a bookstore (which would be ISBN). From looking online, it looks like a EAN-13 is (maybe?) just a UPC with a country code digit? So this (again…maybe) would mean that once I have a UPC, that I could just use it to make a valid EAN code with my country code?
