In case the scanner cant figure out the bars it can then read the numbers.
2 Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.”
John 3:16- “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”
Ephesians 2:8, 9= “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not as a result of works, so that no one may boast”
1 John 5:13- “These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, in order that you may know that you have eternal life.”..

Barcodes are machine readable “text”, designed to be fast to decode, cheap to implement, short, reliable, minimal effort required. They can include text, like the simple Code39.
As a comparison, the large wacky numbers at the bottom of checks are also machine readable. I bet the equipment to read them is much more expensive and probably requires checks perfectly aligned so they can be read.
