My uncle got this 2gb memory module , which if im not mistaken is fancy for RAM….anyways the label has these specifications…it has the barcode…followed by this code KTL-TP667/2G…followed by “2GB memory module” ….followed by this part…which is what concerns me….it says “Equiv. LENOVO p/n 73P3847″….i have a Sony Vaio with model number VGN-FE880E …i am wondering if this extra RAM memory will fit my computer and if so.. do i need software to instal it or something?………..the picture of the module is here tinypic.com/r/ptwkx/5 any help is appreciated

Do not mistake RAM for software, it is strictly hardware. There are a few basic types of Random Access Memory for laptops, such as DDR and DDR2 that have various speed clocks (667 or 800 usually). It doesn’t matter what brand the memory is, it only matters what the specifications of the memory are. For example your Lenovo memory would work in your Sony computer if it is the correct type of memory. To install the memory there is a hatch on the back of your computer. Most of the time there is only one hatch. Just remove that with whatever type fastener is applied to the hatch. There will be a tray that pops up when the tabs are pushed to the side. Here is a dummy walk through… dummies.com/how-to/content/how-to-remove-ram-from-your-laptop.html. To figure out what type of memory that your computer has visit this website… corsair.com/configurator/default.aspx.

The memory that your uncle has is actually a popular brand of memory, Kingston. There should be another sticker or identifier on the memory that says DDR 667 or DDR2 667 or something similar. If you find out what memory your uncle has then cross check it with the Corsair memory finder for your laptop and they match, you can install it in your computer. Otherwise you can visit newegg.com/Store/Category.aspx?Category=17&name=Memory. One the right hand column there is a “Memory Configurator.” Use that to select your platform and browse the selections. Newegg usually offers a low price on all of there system memory.

Also the RAM usually speeds up the computer is ways that are hard to notice. If you have many programs and applications open at one time the extra memory will be available for random memory allocation and speed up your computer. Often times users upgrade the memory but not the processor and the processor can not think as fast as the memory, and in turn your computer is limited by your processor rather that your memory. Though if the memory is free it can just be slapped into your computer and can possibly increase system performance.
