I’ve never heard of this printer but there are usually settings in the Print Dialog box that allow you to decrease the resolution or print quality so that you can speed up the printing.
Printing at the highest quality on most printers will slow them down considerably.

God whenever I have seen these that have always had to go to the place that has suppled them even the IT dept would not touch them
One thing that does come to mind is the tape able to turn freely as this will slow it down. I have seen them jam and stop the printer dead in its tracks
As far as I know you can’t speed them up and if it is a problem try your supplier

These printers can be very quick & efficient if done correctly and are very durable and reliable if properly maintained.
The Zebra 170PAX3 printer has a fixed resolution (or print quality) of 203 or 300 dpi (dots per inch), which is determined strictly by which printhead is installed, and cannot be adjusted, nor will it change or affect the speed at which the printer prints. The printer is capable of printing from 2″ per second up to at least 8″ per second or more, again depending on the exact model’s capability. This speed is programmable thru the printer driver and the software application.
If the printer stops or pauses printing between each label, then it is most probably due to the computer/program processing speed, communications speed or a lot of data per label being downloaded to printer.
If the labels are printing continuously without stopping/pausing and are seemingly coming out slow, then probably a speed setting within the driver or label program.
The following are the different things that can affect the apparent print speed of the printer:
1. Printer speed set to a low value by either the printer driver or software.
2. Communication (don’t know how you have yours hooked up):
- Serial interface: Baud rate is low, try setting rate up to higher setting (needs to be done on both the computer and printer). The maximum setting is 57600.
The following interfaces are fixed speeds and cannot be adjusted and are affected by computer processing:
- Parallel (Centronics)
- Twinax
- Coax
- ZebraNetII® PrintServer II (Ethernet) Internal (l0BaseT)
3. Computer processing speed – should be dedicated to printing, if multi-tasking, data & processing speed will be affected by other programs/tasks running.
4. Programming:
- Program could be old/slow
- Depending on what is being printed, improper programming technique can slow printing a lot. Would have to know exactly what is being printed to give any possible help. There is a lot of simple processing the printer can handle easily & quickly, but often done by computer which causes slow printing. If just barcodes and numbers, and all are the same, should be very quick, possible programming issue. If sequentially numbered barcodes, probable programming issue. If each one is unique and has variable data included, then communication speed, computer/program processing speed, and/or improper programming issue.
These are issues that I would usually look at onsite and could judge as to where the problem most likely lied by observation and evaluation of the programming code and other things.
If you want to you can e-mail me with questions and I can see if I can help you out.
Best of luck.
