Can I reinstall XP Pro from a store bought CD thats already installed on other computers.?

Heres the deal, Im trying to fix a freinds computer. She has an older Gateway that came with XP Pro installed. It has a Microsoft sticker on the case that says XP Pro with barcode and Product Key. The XP cd i want to use i know will not pass validation because its already being used elsware. When i go to reinstall with the cd, instead of using the product key that came with it can i type the product key from the Gateway and have everything work OK.

can you exchange verizon phone within the 30day period if I already cut off the barcode from box?

Well I got the LG ally about two weeks ago. I was happy with this phone but now that the droid x is available I will like to exchange it for the droid x. But I already cut off the barcode of the box for the mail in rebate. Will they accept the exchange without the barcode in the box?

Looking for UPS & other, Barcode reader soft for XP sp2 PC … I have a CueCat PS2 scanner already & I ….?

and I want to use it to catalog /inventory items in my home that have barcodes.

For instance – AND MOST IMPORTANT .. I want to inventory my kitchen… like all my food products. There is a very expensive software online called Kitchen Companion – well, I don’t have the money for that!! LOL … but I figure there is something else out there – somewhere that I can use WITH EASE.
Kitch. Compan. can actually read the UPC barcode that you scan into your PC and make lists for you and then inventory them and help you make grocery lists (if you scan milk in that you already have in inventory it will remove it if you rescan it as “done /used/depleted ” … so when the milk is gone it goes on a grocery list instead of kitchen inventory) … I found readerware softeware for books and CDs and stuff… but I want something for UPC barcodes… something EASY and user friendly – again – I am using the radioshack PS2 – :cuecat …
THANKS!

They already have self checkout machines for library books. Does anyone think one day librarians will be gone?

I asked a librarian this question and she replied not in this lifetime. But really, if all you have to do is scan the barcode on your library card and then scan the book’s barcode it stands to reason at least that aspect of the librarian’s job description would be missing in this scenario of self checkouts.

Best answer:

There are a couple of issues here.

First, “library stafff” vs “librarian.” The person who checks out your books, does the shelving, etc., is usually not an MLS degree-holding librarian, except perhaps in smaller libraries. They may hold another title, like “library assistant,” “circulation clerk,” etc. This is not to say they aren’t talented/knowledgeable, but their job duties aren’t those of a librarian. Librarians usually deal with more complex functions of the library: assisting with research, managing the scope and nature of the collection, outreach, programming, designing instruction, etc. Have a look at the description in the US Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Outlook Handbook:

bls.gov/oco/ocos068.htm
(Note that the outlook is actually listed as “favorable”)

That said, the increasing amount of technology and self-service in many libraries is changing both how much staff we need and what roles we have those staff doing. Perhaps there will be fewer people at the check-out desk (we’ll always need someone there to help solve billing problems, etc.), but they might take on other roles, like providing basic assistance in the computer area, helping with public programs, etc. Also keep in mind that, as long as there’s a physical collection of books, videos, etc., someone’s got to keep it in order, up-to-date, etc. That’s a role jointly split between librarians and other staff. So, there’s still a lot to do for quite a time to come.

Could everything go online and do away with the library? Again, not anytime soon. Even online resources cost money (since not every source wants to give their info away for free on the web). Libraries often purchase large databases of premium information that you and all your fellow users can use online and which go well beyond Google, etc. in their depth of information on certain topics. Librarians work to evaluate and select these, and then become experts in using them and teaching our patrons to use them on an as-needed basis. We’re also shifting our roles, from working behind desks to doing more “outside” work–helping with research, teaching communities to be more aware of the information sources they use, doing chat and IM-based reference assistance, etc. So, frankly, we’ve got more to do–not less!

Also have a look at librarycareers.org.
And this CNN report: cnn.com/2009/TECH/09/04/future.library.technology/

Hope this is helpful!

Since you’ve posted this in a programming forum, I’m guessing you don’t mean cutting them off packages, right?

So, do you want to *generate* bar codes, or *read* them?

If you want to read them, you’ll need to get a bar code scanner or reader. These generally include the software necessary to read them, but it’s up to you to decide what you want to do with them.

If you want to generate bar codes, you will also need some software, or you will need to study up on the concept and implementation of bar codes and write your own. A non-trivial task, I might add.

How do you determine if postage is already attached to a postcard? ?

How do you determine if postage is already attached to a postcard? ?
2 postcards I bought have UPC scanner symbols where the postage goes – my husband thinks this means postage is already on it. I paid 49 cents for each postcard. I think I need to add postage to them.

your husband is correct….

What a good idea, we have so much lurking in the back of the pantry unused and forgotten! Another weird geeky project to scare my boyfriend with! haha

Anyhoo here’s two resources I found that might help. The first is a downloadable program. The second is a site for configuring & customizing it. I found that the phrase “declaw cue cat” gave great results. Have fun! The things we go through to use a “free giveaway” item! haha
