I need help from a fellow Wa-lmart cashier(s)???!!! What do I do about missing UPCs and bar codes?
Ok, so I recently started work as a Wal-mart cashier, and there is just one customer/job dilemma that I have that I’m still unclear about: Merchandise without UPC/bar codes! I know, of course the logical explanation is to call a CSM for assistance. But the majority of my CSMs are less than helpful when it comes to price checks, and rarely respond to action code requests. When I can manage to flag one down usually tell me (and the customer) that there is nothing they can do.
Is there no way to manually enter a price in this instances?
But this doesn’t seem right? Is it REALLY the customer’s fault that the bar code is missing, especially if it is a discontinued or clearance item to which there is no more inventory left? Most of the time, I would say no, it’s not worth the customer being upset. And I 100% understand that bar codes are to keep track of inventory, etc, and I would totally not be comfortable manually entering a price for an item of value based on the customer’s word… but if the item is within reason (under ) like a box of cereal or a stick of deodorant, would it really be worth telling the customer that there is “nothing we can do about it” .
My question is, should I just get over my customer satisfaction and learn how to disappoint my customers, or is there a way to actually key this info myself (without getting fired) for small common items on the rare occasion they come through without a UPC/ bar code?
I appreciate any feedback, I’ve searched all over and just can’t seem to find a definite answer.

So that ZIP codes may be machine readable?
So that ZIP codes may be machine readable, the Postal Service encodes them as a
group of five bars, some tall, some short, in groups of five. In how many distinct
ways can two tall and three short bars be arranged?

Could someone steal my tickets if they get a photo of the bar codes?
Photos of some tickets I own have found their way onto the internet, and I was wondering if people could actually take the bar codes and do something with them. I’m worried because these were very expensive and I don’t want to show up and be told that they’re void or someone has already used the same bar codes.

What codes do I need and what web languages do I need to learn?
OK I have a huge idea which can be the next big internet thing if done right.
I don’t wish to reveal the idea but I need to know what sort of coding I need to learn.
Like if you could specifyh if I require to learn PHP or HTML for a particular coding, and maybe links to easy to understand step-by-step instructions on how to achieve such things.
Ok these are the thing I need to know:
- A log in page. I understand a lot of space would be required if everyone made their own profiles and stuff, but what I’m trying to achieve is like a history system. So each time someone logs in, they are presented with the same thing, they don’t have the ability to change anything (its not like Facebook where you can post statuses and upload pictures), here its just individual accounts, and since the website will have a searching system, whatever you search gets saved so next time if you wish to search something similar, it will pop up in the search bar. A bit like Google does but it’s gonna be a searching system for each user, and I feel they require a log-in. There will be basic profiles like when signing up, you require to add your postal code, name and age, and a single line about themselves.
- Search system. I don’t wish to use Google, and just want to start my own searching system. It’s not like Google, or Yahoo or Ask.com
It’s different, it’s something a bit more precise. So if you type in ‘two tickets for Die Hard 2′ or something, it recognises post code and searches for cinemas near to this post code which are screening the movie.
I hope people can help me with where I need to start and what I need to learn. Please be detailed but try and explain in plain english. Nothing frustrates me than listening to some person who explains it to someone who has experience, I however only know HTML and have started to use PHP so I’d appreciate help.
Thanks
