We should remember that a computer cannot read barcodes. Hence, for a computer to utilize the information contained in the barcode, the data within the barcode must be captured and then decoded into a data format, which the computer can process.

Thus, Cordless barcode scanners convey wirelessly information(s) from scanned to a computer using proprietary radio communication or Bluetooth. Technically, it is a device that captures or reads the barcode information and then sends it to the decoder.

The main advantage of Cordless barcode scanners is that it gives the user choices over corded scanners by scanning in various locations, making the difficult jobs go easier, faster, smoother. Also, it is best to use when a cord or wire is a problem or a safety hazard.

The Latest In Cordless Barcode Scanners

Motorola Enterprise Mobility group which is largely built around the barcode scanning products and technologies gained through its acquisition of Symbol Technologies (the leader in mobile computers and handheld barcode scanners) recently announced the MT2000 Handheld Mobile Terminal.  This handheld barcode scanner replaces the Symbol Phaser line of cordless barcode scanners which were the defacto standard for rugged handheld cordless barcode scanners.  In addition to providing barcode scanning of 1D and 2D barcodes, this handheld barcode scanner also features DPM and image capture capabilities.  Unlike the phase handheld barcode scanners though, the MT2000 Handheld Mobile Terminal does not require MCL for application development as it uses Microsoft’s Windows CE 5.0 operating system; nevertheless, the MT2000 handheld barcode scanner does come with some pre-built inventory applications as well as an MCL client.  For cordless barcode scanning, this device uses 802.11a/b/g wireless technologies to provide barcode scanning virtually anywhere in your business.  As a rugged barcode scanner, the MT2000 cordless scanner has a 6 ft./1.8 m drop specification, IP54 sealing, and scratch-resistant tempered glass exit window help ensure reliable barcode scanning in spite of everyday drops and exposure to dust and liquids. While Motorola’s discontinuation of the Phaser Series of handheld barcode scanners has been disappointing, it appears that the MT2000 will soon become the defector cordless barcode scanner for companies to implement handheld barcode scanners in the business.

In other developments, Honeywell, formerly Hand Held Products, announces availability of the Honeywell Dolphin 9700 rugged mobile computer with integrated barcode scanner.  In addition to wireless LAN, wireless WAN and GPS capabilities, this mobile computer is available with scanner options including the 5300 Standard Range (SR) barcode scanner, the Smart Focus (SF) barcode imager, or the High Density (HD) Imagers with High-Visibility laser aimer – all of these built around the Adaptus barcode scanning and imaging technology .  The Dolphin 9600 handheld barcode scanner enables cordless barcode scanning anytime, anywhere and is housed in a sleek yet rugged design.  In addition to barcode scanning, the device is equipped with multi-media data collection capabilities to ensure that users can capture signatures, as well as full-color images and video.

Next month, we expect to see some further developments with handheld barcode scanners as Datalogic introduces their ELF line of cordless barcode scanners and mobile computers.

Cordless Barcode Scanners?
I have about a little over 300 book titles that need to be inventoried etc. The books are no where near the computer and I’m looking for a barcode scanner that will store the information and allow me to enter info like author, publisher, year etc – then connect to PC and transfer the info. I know they exist but, I’m looking for recommendations and experiences from others to help aid in choosing a brand or type. I’m not looking to go over 0 but, that depends on what I hear and find.

Best answer:

I use the Opticon OPN 2001

Its a great little unit.
