Personal Barcode readers?

Personal Barcode readers?
Some stores are notorious for a discrepancy between the displayed price of an item and the price stored in the computers when the barcode is scanned. The stores will give you the lower price if you point it out to them, but this requires the customer keeping a sharp eye as items are rung up. This is especially difficult when there are multiple items rung up so quickly that the customer cannot keep up.

I’ve seen the “price-checker” stations in places like Target. These barcode scanners allow you to self-scan an item, thereby giving you a chance to price-check yourself.

Are there handheld versions of this that I could take into any store and verify barcode prices?

Best answer:

No, you need to be connected into the store database. I have heard that there is a program for cell phones that have a camera.

For anyone who has developed barcode readers applications?
I am helping to develop a software program that reads the inputs from a barcode reader. The barcode reader will scan the barcodes on a merchant’s items and store the data read into a database. Anyone has any idea which programming language can i use to achieve this? and how the program interact with the hardware barcode scanner? Thanx.

Best answer:

Any language will help(VB Dot net, C++) In general bar code scanner is programmable device which send to output numbers or numbers with CF/LR – you can program this. So your application get these Numbers and if you need to print bar code – use bar code shrift or if you need database put numbers in database. That’s all.
