A card reader is anything, usually an electronic device, that reads ‘cards’. There is a wide variety of things called cards and hence there are many things called ‘card readers’. when you scan, a string of characters will be entered as if you typed on the keyboard.

Because Zebras have black and white stripes, could you scan one with a barcode scanner and get a reading?

No. Even though the printers are called “zebra” printers.
They require specific ordering, thinknness and spacing. It is astoundingly unlikely that a zebra would have a meaningful dispersion of lines. I suppose it is REMOTELY possible, but EXTREMELY unlikely.
