How does one update a virus scanner through a wireless connection?
I have recently purchased a laptop. It has the McAfee virus scanner installed, though don’t know how to update it. I have successfully established a connection(wireless) between my home pc and the laptop. I have tried to update the scanner by opening “VirusScan” Console, then opening th”AutoUpdate”te task and finally clicking the Update Now button. As the update progresses all the “checks” fail (“Error occurred”) and eventually it is confirmed that “The Update failed” in the “Last result” column, “VirusScan Console” window. Can anyone help me solve my problem?

Best answer:

My entire network is wireless and there is no problem updating McAfee on the one desktop and AVG on another desktop and laptop.

Make sure your firewall is allowing the antivirus program through to update.

I think I have a Virus, Scanners say no?

I think I have a Virus, Scanners say no?
I think I have a computer virus, but after using AVG and Spybot, both come back clean. I use Firefox with NoScript enabled. Lately my passwords in Firefox have stopped saving. I used to be able to log into any site automatically, and now I need to type it in again. After I type it in, it saves again, but it seems like this one time all my passwords were erased.

Not only that, but this morning I log on and my wireless doesn’t automatically connect to the internet. All these weird things that normally don’t happen are happening suddenly.

Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas?
Thanks

Run these two, free, update, one at a time.

If me and my neighbor share a wireless network, if they get a virus can it infect my computer?

If me and my neighbor share a wireless network, if they get a virus can it infect my computer?
My neighbor asked if she could use my wireless on occasion. I don’t have a problem with it, but I don’t know if she has a virus scanner and firewall. If her computer gets infected or something happens to it will it trickle down to my computer? Can she view files on my computer/ see where I go? I do have a fire wall. Should I just tell her to go get her own or I’m safe?

THANKS so much! :)
umm. I didnt notice “share folders”.. I don’t intend to? Can I not?
password is all :)
ty pc for the info :)

It’s possible, if you plan to share files with each other, but keep in mind that your connection will be slower then hers, as you are farther away from the router, so it will be a little slow for you.

How to get this mean virus off my computer at work?

How to get this mean virus off my computer at work?
I just got to work, to find that somehow over the weekend someone managed to get a virus on my computer. Normally, I would just kill it with all the happy little virus programs and restore the computer to a previous date. However, the virus will not allow me to get to these programs to do. When I go into start to go to Programs, I don’t even have the option. The entire screen is filled with red and a large toxic symbol that is trying to get me to download a virus scanner from some unheard of website.

I called the company’s IT, but since it is labor day the bastard isn’t answering his phone.

Anyone have any helpful suggestions?

Also, I beleive the virus is porn related or was picked up at a porn site because there are links for porn serch engines all over my desktop.
I would like if at all possible to avoid downloading anything, as some of the places listed in the first answer are causing the problems. A couple of those are infected as it is.

Best answer:

Use these.
After installing and updating the programs, reboot to “Safe Mode”
Then run the scanners.

Malwarebytes’ free program at this link.

slow internet?? virus scanners? interfering?
ok my mom insists that we need 4 different virus/internet filter/scanning programs on the computer…now our internet is going slow as hell…we run firefox 3 (newest version) …our comp is about 6 months old…and we have wireless..incredibly fast before she put that crap on the comp…and its snowing and windy here…just thought i should add that

Best answer:

You only need:
1 spyware program
1 internet filter
1 virus scanner
1 firewall

So that’d be 4…

AVG Free Edition updated itself on 8-24-07 then detected FEAR.exe as a Virus – False Pos. – How can I fix?

AVG Free Edition updated itself on 8-24-07 then detected FEAR.exe as a Virus – False Pos. – How can I fix?
1st – To be clear… I have verified through several scanners that I do not have a Virus and have also found other F.E.A.R. players that are reporting they got the exact same thing. Definitely a False positive!

2nd – I know that I am getting what I paid for. But why should I pay for the full version if they are NOTacknowledging what has been done (rendered application unusable and provide no means to repair without removing all directories, apps and registry instances of both AVG and F.E.A.R)?

3rd – In short, has anyonbe else in the Yahoo answers forums come across the same thing with an easy fix?

If not, I will go through the uninstall and PAY for a better AV solution.
Like I said, I’ve tried many other scanners (including Panda, McAffee and Norton). AVG has no info…imagine that.
Restoring file and clicking ignore doesn’t work since it already “healed” the file and adjusted permissions to not allow it to be used. Restoring permissions doesn’t help either. AVG appears to be really invasive with no outs.
Thanks for answering folks…But there is no virus. This is a False Positive! 100%!

It’s looking more and more like I will have to uninstall AVG because it is really junk and re-install F.E.A.R., which I really don’t want to do.

My question was how to fix and avoid doing the re-install.

Best answer:

i wouldn’t even pay for avg if the free product is that bad imagine how bad the paid for version will be. i hear time after time avg is detecting false visrus’s or help i got a virus and avg wont let me delete it. i would visit avg see if they’ve put a patch out to fix the f.e.a.r.exe problem.

avg = you will get a virus sooner than later.
