Advantages Of A Led Barcode Scanner
Advantages Of A Led Barcode Scanner
A LED Barcode Scanner works on a technology which is fairly different from that used in the laser scanners. In LED scanners, a series of tiny light sensors are arranged in a row. The light which is reflected from the barcode label is then trapped and measured by these sensors.
Though this technology is least popular but can be used in a wide range of applications. A LED Barcode Scanner is perhaps the most durable scanner which is due to the non-existence of moveable tiny machinery parts in it. The light plays the major role in such types of scanners. A LED Barcode Scanner is mostly found in warehouses, industrial units, etc. where the chances of accidental fall of the device are quite high. The sturdiness of this type of scanner makes it perfect for such working environments.
The functional technology is quite different between an LED scanner and a laser scanner, but while reading the characters of a barcode label, both are alike, as both are held static over the barcode so that they recognize the code.
A laser scanner needs to move back and forth across the barcode label so that the reflected light is trapped by the scanner, while a LED scanner needs not to be moved. The miniscule light sensors of a LED scanner pick up the ambient light emerging out of the barcode label.
A LED scanner is sometimes also referred to as a CCD scanner. CCD is the abbreviation for “charge-coupled device.” CCD, in fact, is the characteristic of a LED scanner that help the electrical charge to get converted into digital information.
The functioning methodology of a LED scanner is quite similar to that of a camera based, or a 2D imaging scanner. The major difference between these two types of scanners is that a LED scanner picks up an image of the barcode, while a camera based scanner takes a real two-dimensional image of the barcode label.
People use barcode scanners but often fail to recognize the difference between a LED scanner and a CCD scanner. The swiping machines in which people swipe their credit or debit cards contain a LED scanner that reads the magnetic strips of the cards and transfers the information encrypted in the card to the computer. A LED scanner is also used in the attendance recording machines in offices and also used in the locks on hotel doors for security purposes.
A LED scanner is comparatively more efficient than other laser scanners. A LED scanner can read even smaller labels with great comfort. Only disadvantage that one can complain of a LED scanner is that it normally comes with a lower scanning range. This type of a scanner can read a barcode label from a distance of less than three inches only.
I have worked in the IT sector for longer than I care to remember, I currently work for eMobileScan who are leading the way in the data capture industry, we specialise in Barcode Scanners and Handheld Computers . My real interest lies with RFID and Mobile Computing, If you have any questions please add a comment and I will get back to you as soon as I can
